Chapter 29
âSo, this is where you hide every morning.â Tina handed Susan a Starbucks Cinnamon Dolce Latte.
âIâm hardly hiding. Thanks for bringing this.â Susan took a sip and rolled her eyes. âHeavenly! Iâve been drinking that horrid stuff Michael bought at Samâs Club all morning, and I hate it.â She pointed to a Mr. Coffee machine on the counter of the Henderson Ranch office.
âNo problem. Where is Michael?â
âHeâs meeting with someone in Henderson ⦠the city planner I think.â
âThis is a nice office.â Tina sipped her iced decaf, looking around the space that used to be the Petite Pet shop. âCozy. I wondered what it looked like. Itâs a lot quieter here than at the White Elephant.â
They discussed how plans were progressing on the ranch, and Susan showed her the latest architectural drawings.
âWow, thatâs a lot of house.â Tina peered closer at the blueprints. âI didnât know it was going to be so big.â
Susan shook her head. âIt gets bigger every day.â
âLike me.â
âWell, not quite like you. But since you mentioned itâwhat exactly are you going to do?â Susan rocked back in her office chair. âRyan called last night, told me all about your weight-gain dilemma.â
Tina sat bolt upright. âYou didnât say anything to him, did you?â
âOf course not. I wouldnât do that, Tina.â
âI know. Iâm sorry.â
âIâm sorry too, about the Tropicana. But having you at the site full time is going to be a blessingâfor us at least.â
âI love being there.â Tina put her cup on the edge of Susanâs desk and paced slowly around the office. âI know I should tell Ryan about the baâ about my condition. But I donât know what to tell him. I still canât decide what to do.â
âYou donât think he suspects at all?â
âI donât think so. Not even my boss suspects. She just thinks Iâm getting fat. Do I look fat? I mean, can you tell?â Tina stood sideways and pulled her blouse tight to her frame.
âNot at all, and that blows me away. Youâre just over halfway through your second trimester, and other than maybe a little more fullness in your beautiful face, I donât see the slightest difference. How did your boss find out?â
âWe have a mandatory monthly weigh-in.â
âYouâre kidding.â
âNo, Iâm not. Her scale says Iâm up eight pounds, but itâs really eleven.â
Susan was careful not to pressure the distraught young woman in any way about her pregnancy. She knew that Tina was still in weekly counseling with Thelma and that she continued to weigh all of her options. She was cutting it close, though. In Nevada an abortion was illegal after twenty-four weeks. Susan prayed that wouldnât even be an issue.
âWell, dear, youâre going to have to come to some decision soon, because Ryan is taking personal responsibility for feeding you too much. Heâs determined to help you lose weight. But personally, I think heâs conflicted.â
âWhat do you mean?â
âYou know darn well what I mean. I think heâd feed you pizza and spaghetti every day if it meant he could have you with him at the office full time.
